Beyond the ordinary

Galloway Forest Park is the largest Forest Park in Britain, with over 300 square miles of outstanding natural beauty consisting of 16 forests and everything you need for a great day out, whatever the time of year. Meet red deer and wild goats, or enjoy classic scenery from your car on a forest drive. You can also follow in the footsteps of Robert the Bruce or picnic beside a peaceful loch. Galloway is also home to the UK’s first Dark Sky Park – one of the best places to stargaze in Europe.

Learn to Navigate with Ascending Peak

Ascending Peak is a National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) approved provider. The NNAS award scheme is personal performance, non-competitive, incentive based navigation training for all ages to learn navigation skills and gain confidence to get out and enjoy the countryside. NNAS courses are delivered throughout the country by over 300 approved providers.

The aims of the National Navigation Award Scheme’s Navigator Award are simple – to give lovers of the outdoors, whatever their sport, age or fitness, the freedom to explore the paths, trails, hills and mountains of Britain and abroad.

There are three levels – the Bronze Award, the Silver Award and the Gold  Award. Progressing through the three awards will take you from being an absolute map and compass novice right through to be an expert navigator at Gold.

The NNAS Navigator Awards (Bronze, Silver and Gold) are accredited by the Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at Level 4, 5 and 6 respectively and 2 SCQF credit points are awarded on completion.

You don’t, of course, have to start at Bronze, although it expected that you will have completed the Silver award at least before you start a Gold Award course.

Please note that gaining an award does not give you a qualification to teach or lead. It is a recognition of the level of skill at which you can navigate.
